Rhino 8 → Rhino 7: what stays, what changes

Rhino 8 → Rhino 7 compatibility

Downgrading from Rhino 8 to Rhino 7 is one of the smoothest conversions we support. Here's what to expect.

What is preserved

  • Layers, block instances, groups
  • NURBS surfaces and solids
  • Curves, points, meshes
  • Materials (basic parameters), textures
  • Dimensions, text, annotations

What gets simplified

  • SubD: converted to a mesh or NURBS approximation.
  • PushPull history: baked in — the parametric history is lost.
  • New shaders / PBR extensions: mapped to standard Rhino 7 materials.

Tips before converting

  • Bake any parametric geometry you want to keep as static.
  • Save a copy of the original .3dm before downgrading, just in case.
  • If you rely heavily on SubD, converting to Rhino 6 or older is not recommended.

RhinoFileConverter handles all of the above automatically — just upload and pick your target version.
