Rhino 8 and Rhino 7 use different .3dm archive versions. Here's what changes, why Rhino 7 can't open Rhino 8 files, and how to convert between them.

Can Rhino 7 open Rhino 8 files?
No. Rhino file formats are backward-compatible but never forward-compatible. Rhino 8 can open Rhino 7 files, but Rhino 7 cannot parse the newer OpenNURBS v80 archive used by Rhino 8. When you try, Rhino shows an error such as "Unknown file format" or "Unable to read file".

How to open Rhino 8 files in Rhino 7

Upload your Rhino 8 .3dm file to RhinoFileConverter.

Select Rhino 7 as the target version.

Click Convert — the archive is rewritten from v80 to v70.

Download the converted file and open it in Rhino 7.
What survives the downgrade?
NURBS surfaces, curves, meshes, layers, blocks, materials and object attributes are preserved. Rhino 8-only features such as ShrinkWrap solids and new annotation styles are translated to their closest Rhino 7 equivalents.
