Version guide

Rhino versions explained

Every Rhinoceros release from Rhino 2 (2001) to Rhino 8 (2023) — what it introduced, and how .3dm file compatibility works between them.

The compatibility rule in one sentence

Rhino always opens files from older versions, and never from newer ones. Rhino 8 reads everything. Rhino 5 reads only Rhino 5 and older. If a file is too new, you need to convert it down.

Rhino 8 2023

OpenNURBS v80

The current release. Big changes to modeling history, meshing and materials.

  • PushPull with full history
  • ShrinkWrap — one-command clean mesh from complex geometry
  • Content Filler for pattern-based population
  • Reworked annotations, dim styles, hatches
  • Grasshopper 2 preview and Grasshopper Player CLI
  • New Cycles material system

Rhino 7 2021

OpenNURBS v70

The SubD release — Rhino finally gained true subdivision surface modeling.

  • SubD geometry (T-Splines replacement)
  • QuadRemesh — auto-generate quad meshes from NURBS or scans
  • New PDF export, page layouts
  • Rhino.Inside — run Rhino inside Revit, AutoCAD, Unity
  • Single-line fonts for laser & CNC

Rhino 6 2018

OpenNURBS v60

Grasshopper became part of Rhino — a huge jump for parametric design.

  • Grasshopper 1 shipped with Rhino (no separate install)
  • New display modes, faster viewport
  • Improved BlockManager with nested block editing
  • Revised annotation styles
  • New render pipeline based on Cycles

Rhino 5 2012

OpenNURBS v50

First 64-bit release. Introduced Gumball and the modern surface toolset.

  • 64-bit engine (large models finally usable)
  • Gumball manipulator
  • Improved surface analysis tools
  • New docking UI
  • Enhanced Boolean stability

Rhino 4 2007

OpenNURBS v40

Improved rendering and workflow polish.

  • Clipping planes
  • Redesigned UI
  • New rendering pipeline
  • History recording refined

Rhino 3 2004

OpenNURBS v30

History recording arrived — construction geometry could stay live.

  • History recording
  • Improved surface fitting
  • Better STEP/IGES exchange

Rhino 2 2001

OpenNURBS v20

The first release built on the open-source OpenNURBS toolkit.

  • OpenNURBS 1.0
  • Initial NURBS surface toolset
