How to Convert Between Rhino Versions

Everything you need to know about converting .3dm files between Rhino versions, up and down.

Converting down (newer → older)

This is the common case: a collaborator on Rhino 6 or 7 needs to open your Rhino 8 file. Use RhinoFileConverter to rewrite the file in the older format — it takes seconds and preserves your geometry.

Converting up (older → newer)

No conversion needed! Every Rhino release opens all older .3dm files natively. Just open the file and save it to store it in the newer format.

Batch conversions
