Rhino Won't Open a .3dm File — How to Fix It

The most common reasons Rhino refuses to open a .3dm file, and how to recover the geometry in minutes.

Reason 1: The file is from a newer Rhino version

By far the most frequent cause. If a colleague on Rhino 8 sends you a file and you're on Rhino 7, Rhino will show 'Unable to read file'. Convert the file to your version with RhinoFileConverter and it will open normally.

Reason 2: The file is corrupted mid-download

A .3dm truncated during upload/download can't be parsed. Ask the sender to re-share via a reliable channel (Drive, Dropbox, WeTransfer) rather than email attachments over 20 MB.

Reason 3: Wrong file extension

A file renamed to .3dm that was actually a .stp, .igs or .obj will fail. Check the true format or ask the sender to re-export explicitly as Rhino .3dm.
