How to Open Rhino 8 Files in Rhino 7

Rhino 7 can't read Rhino 8 .3dm files directly. Use the converter below to rewrite the file in Rhino 7 format, then open it normally.

Files will be converted to Rhino 7 (if compatible).

Why Rhino 7 can't open Rhino 8 files

Every major Rhino release updates the .3dm archive version. Rhino 8 uses OpenNURBS v80, while Rhino 7 only understands up to v70. Because Rhino formats are not forward-compatible, Rhino 7 refuses to open the newer file until it is downconverted.

Step-by-step guide

  1. 1

Upload your Rhino 8 .3dm file to the converter above.

  2. 2

Make sure Rhino 7 is selected as the target version.

  3. 3

Click Convert — the file is rewritten from OpenNURBS v80 to v70.

  4. 4

Download the converted file and open it in Rhino 7.

What is preserved?

  • NURBS curves and surfaces
  • Meshes and SubD (converted to mesh/NURBS for Rhino 7)
  • Layers, blocks and object attributes
  • Materials and rendering meshes
